It was noted that the most energy-intensive stage during water treatment was pumping. Whereas energy for performing purification stated only about a few percent of total energy demand. One of the newest approaches in water treatment is using renewable energy sources like wind, solar radiation or geothermal energy.
Energy consumption in municipal water supply systems is predicted to increase over the next 15 years, amounting to a 60–100% increase . Depending on the technology, plant scheme and quality of the treated water, wastewater treatment plants consume approximately 0.5–2.0 kWh per cubic meter of treated water.
During their investigation, the energy and chemical consumption in the water treatment plants were influenced by factors such as flow rate, population, water source, and pollution. Also, (Van Der Hoek, 2012) examined embodied carbon mitigation and energy recovery in built environments through the water cycle.
Due to those reasons naturally arose the need of combining water treatment methods with energy sources in a sustainable way. The water treatment system is determined by water quality and water type. Different technologies will be applied for surface water, groundwater, seawater or brackish water.
Notably, (Tow et al., 2021) suggests wastewater treatment as a means of increasing access to fresh water with minimal energy costs. Moreover, the model indicated that the potable reuse method is applied because it has the lowest energy consumption and the largest water supply.
The extent of investment in the US for sustainable practices and technologies and low-carbon-energy policies has influenced the country's impact on energy consumption and carbon emissions in the water treatment sector.
