U.S. PV Deployment The International Energy Agency projects significant growth for photovoltaics (PV) in 2024 over the record-breaking year in 2023. Over the next two years, virtually all new electric generation capacity will be PV, batteries, and wind.
By 2050, Asia, led by China, is projected to dominate the solar PV market with around 57% of global PV installations, followed by North America (21%) and Europe (11%).
BNEF reports that at the end of 2023, global PV manufacturing capacity was between 650 and 750 GW―a growth of 2–3x in the past five years, 90% of which occurred in China. In 2023, global PV production was between 400 and 500 GW.
It is seen that the global weighted-average LCOE of solar PV technology reduced by about 89 % from 0.445 USD/kWh in 2010 to 0.049 USD/kWh in 2022. It is noticeable that the LCOE of PV technology has dropped into the range of fossil fuel electricity costs since 2014.
Asia will proceed to lead the solar PV market by about 65% of the world’s PV installations (mainly China with 76% of the total), followed by North America at 15% (primarily the US with over 90% of the total) and Europe at 10% by 2030.
In 2017, China became the largest solar PV market, outperforming Europe, with approximately 1/3 of the world’s installed capacity. The world's cumulative installed solar PV power capacity passed 1046 GW in 2022 (IRENA, 2023). Table 3.
