As depicted in Fig. 4, membranes utilized in IBA-RFBs can be broadly classified into ion exchange membranes and porous membranes. Among ion exchange membranes, the most prevalent example is the PFSA ion exchange membrane, exemplified by Nafion.
Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) carry positive charges achieving ion selection through Donnon exclusion for RFB systems having positively charged active species , . Due to charge repulsion, AEMs show unsatisfactory ion conductivity and low voltage efficiency for acidic RFB systems in which protons are charge carriers.
It means that using low-cost ion selective membrane could effectively reduce the capital cost of RFB system. As the most widely used ion selective membrane, the cost of the Nafion™ membranes are as high as 500–1000 USD/m 2.
Yet, their stability needs further improvement due to the introduction of nonfluorinated main chains and ion exchange groups. Heightened water uptake and swelling ratio, while beneficial for enhancing ion conductivity, concurrently enlarge ion transport channels, potentially compromising membrane ion selectivity and stability .
