Despite the remarkable progress in battery technology, there are still many challenges in optimizing the structure design of battery packs to achieve lighter, safer, and more efficient systems. Lightweight design is particularly important because reducing the overall weight of a vehicle can significantly improve energy efficiency and endurance.
Studies have shown that a 10% reduction in vehicle weight leads to a 6% to 8% reduction in energy consumption. Therefore, focusing on the lightweight design of battery packs is crucial for the further development of the EV industry [4, 5].
This study proposes a multifunctional structural battery system comprising cylindrical battery cells and a surrounding lightweight lattice metamaterial. The lattice density distribution was optimized via topological optimization to minimize stress on the battery during compression.
Through weight reduction and structural optimization, an innovative power battery pack design scheme is proposed, aiming to achieve a more efficient and lighter electric vehicle power system.
The absence of standards for battery cells and peripheral components in combination with large and distributed design spaces within passenger vehicles open up innumerable possibilities to design battery systems. The results are product specific and uneconomical assembly systems.
An optimized lattice arrangement featuring varying density is identified via topology optimization. Then, a lattice-based structural battery system with a single 18650 cylindrical battery is printed and compressed to determine the protective capability of the structure for the battery.
