Chemical hydrogen generation from coal, chemical hydrogen production from natural gas, and hydrogen production from water electrolysis are currently the three main domestic hydrogen production processes. China is rich in coal reserves, therefore coal gasification hydrogen production technology has greater advantages .
However, the production of green hydrogen is undoubtedly the future direction, and the analysis and prediction of its potential is the first concern. The previous research results show that renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar, and hydroenergy can be applied in green hydrogen preparation in China at present .
A holistic techno-economic optimization model of renewable-based hydrogen production in high spatial–temporal resolution is developed herein. Considering natural and social constraints, the results reveal that the technical potential of wind and solar energy in China are 8.89 and 57.68 PWh, respectively.
