11. Challenges of hydrogen Production investment: H 2 production is immature technology, resulting in higher production costs compared to conventional fuels. The current mechanisms for H 2 production based on renewable energy cannot achieve a price target that competes with hydrocarbons.
Hydrogen storage systems face significant challenges due to the low volumetric energy density of gaseous hydrogen, which limits its practical storage and transport. To achieve useable storage densities, hydrogen must either be compressed or liquefied, both of which introduce technical complexity .
Unlike battery-powered electric vehicles, which are limited by the lower energy density of current battery technologies, hydrogen fuel cells can store more energy in a given mass.
