Are solid-state lithium batteries the future of energy storage?

Abstract In recent years, solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) using solid electrolytes (SEs) have been widely recognized as the key next-generation energy storage technology due to its high safety, high energy density, long cycle life, good rate performance and wide operating temperature range.

What is a lithium based battery?

‘Lithium-based batteries’ refers to Li ion and lithium metal batteries. The former employ graphite as the negative electrode 1, while the latter use lithium metal and potentially could double the cell energy of state-of-the-art Li ion batteries 2.

Why are advanced lithium-ion batteries important?

The development of advanced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density, power density and structural stability has become critical pursuit to meet the growing requirement for high efficiency energy sources for electric vehicles and electronic devices.

How long can a lithium battery last?

Their batteries are based on lithium metal polymer (LMP®) technology and can operate at 50–80℃ with an energy density of>250 Wh kg−1and cycling life of over 4000 times. They plan to develop batteries that can be operated under 20℃ for >1000 cycles and deliver them to OEMs at the industrial level in 2026.
