The efficiency of solar cells decreases significantly if the adhesive degrades [8, 9]. The degradation of adhesive materials in solar panels is a multifaceted problem arising from exposure to a combination of environmental stressors [10, 11, 12].

How long does it take a solar cell to degrade?

In a few hundred hours it achieves the same level of power degradation that takes >3000 h in a damp heat test. The tests to failure included immersion of half-laminated solar cells (front-side exposed) in acetic acid baths of varying concentration, temperature, and cell bias.

Does UV light cause accelerated device degradation?

After covering the devices with a long-pass optical filter with a cut-off wavelength of 435 nm, the rapid degradation disappeared at the initial stage (fig. S4), which confirms that UV light is likely responsible for the accelerated device degradation in the outdoor test.

A long-term PID evolution up to 672 h is performed for glass/back sheet PERC cell modules. The substantial drop in R sh and FF together with dark I-V data suggest that the PID-s is the degradation mechanism occurring at the emitter side of PERC solar cells.
