The standard covers issues such as overcharging, over-discharging, short circuiting and thermal runaway, so does cover some aspects of fire hazards. Other standards for Lithium-ion batteries include UL-1642 and UL-9540. Meanwhile, the charity, Electrical Safety First, is championing proposed legislation on the safety of lithium batteries.
Over the past four years, insurance companies have changed the status of Lithium-ion batteries and the devices which contain them, from being an emerging fire risk to a recognised risk, therefore those responsible for fire safety in workplaces and public spaces need a much better understanding of this risk, and how best to mitigate it.
As more lithium-ion battery (LIB) powered road vehicles become operational across the globe, their involvement in traffic accidents is likely to rise. There is a risk, as in conventionally fueled vehicles, that the on-board energy storage system becomes a hazard to the safety of those involved in, or responding to, accidents.
A novel fire suppression method was investigated as one method to tackle the challenge of suppressant an electric vehicle fire and mitigating reignition. This method considered integrating a commercially available fixed fire suppression systems into a lithium-ion battery pack as a means to prevent thermal runaway from propagating.
Li-ion batteries are used in Electric Vehicles (EVs) for several reasons: they have a high energy density, less self-discharge, low maintenance, and the variety of shapes, chemistries, and performances available.
“In terms of toxicity of EV versus internal combustion, we know that the early off-gassing from lithium-ion batteries is very toxic,” says Sutcliffe. She refers to an e-skateboard fire in an apartment overseas that resulted in fatalities.
