Why do photocells need a reverse bias?

With photocells, we need to apply a reverse bias in order to increase the effect of an internal electric field in the junction, thus causing an imbalance of drift and diffusion across the depletion region. For the photocell, the holes tend to enjoy staying in the p region and the electrons in the n region, reverse bias enhances this tendency.

What happens if a solar cell has a forward bias?

What about forward bias? In forward bias, the internal field would essentially be destroyed and the charge carriers would move very slowly and hence your solar cell would be less effective.

Does a light-activated photocell circuit have a relay output?

The light-activated photocell circuits in Figs. 5 to 10 all have relay outputs that can control many different kinds of external circuits. In many light-activated circuit applications, however, the circuits must trigger audible alarms. This response can also be obtained without relays as shown in Figs. 11 to 17.

How do photocells work?

Photocells are included in photographic exposure meters, light-and dark-activated lights, and intrusion alarms. Some light-activated alarms are triggered by breaking a light beam. There are even light-reflective smoke alarms based on photocells. Fig. 5 to 20 show practical photocell circuits; each will work with almost any photocell.

How can you test a photocell using an ohm meter?

To test a photocell using an ohm meter, observe the resistance variation with light intensity. In the above circuit (Fig. A), R1 represents a CdS photocell in series with a 1000-ohm resistor. The 5 volts from VCC divide across R1 and R2 in proportion to their resistance. For instance, if R1 = R2, one would read 2.5 volts across each component.

Are photocells a variable resistor?

They are variable resistors with an extremely wide range of resistance values (up to hundreds of orders of magnitude) that are dependent on the level of incident light. Resistance in photocells varies inversely with the strength of light that falls on them.
