The battery 'Passport' signifies an unprecedented ramp-up of batteries, as demand for batteries is projected to increase by 19 times by 2030, according to a report. The first of its kind, the Passport will lay the foundation for this growth.
Two processes where significant benefits can be attained from the implementation of the battery passport are recycling and second-life applications of batteries. For the recycling process, it was reported that collected lithium-ion batteries often lack a label providing basic information about their manufacturing and content.
Following the 2023 revision of the EU Battery Legislation, the Chinese government launched the development of a Chinese digital battery passport. The aim is to facilitate trade with the EU, by requiring similar data transparency requirements along the EV battery value chain in China, such as the carbon footprint, circularity, and ESG.
The experts therefore argued that if properly implemented, the battery passport would provide clarity to recyclers about the content of batteries (e.g. battery chemistry, share of different metals in the battery) and access to key data for determining the battery’s SOH and optimal time for recycling.
These include confidentiality concerns and the existence of data silos between battery supply chain actors, a lack of standards to ensure interoperability of data, concerns about reliability and the validity of collected data, and a lack of clarity regarding battery passport responsibilities at different end-of-life stages.
Digital battery passports play a crucial role in the decarbonization of the energy sector. They provide transparency and traceability for the carbon footprint of batteries, enabling more sustainable sourcing, manufacturing, and recycling processes. This, in turn, contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
