Many householders choose an indoor battery installation that’s out of the way, such as in a loft or a utility room or a cupboard or cabinet. The average UK household with a 4kW (kilowatt) or 5kW solar panel system needs a 10-20kWh (kilowatt hour) battery. A lithium battery in this range measures around 1.15 metres high, 75cm wide, and 15cm deep.
The ventilation system should not compromise the fire resistance of the enclosure. The edges of the outdoor port for such ventilation should be at least 1 m from the edges of doors, windows, or ventilation ports for other locations. Batteries should not be installed in any of the following locations: Rooms intended for sleeping.
In general though we always reccomend installing batteries and associated equipment inside a garage or outbuilding for the best solution for ongoing access and maintenance. Ideally, you will need a 2m wide x 2m high wall space to be able to fit the battery system at your home.

Outdoor installation can include an outbuilding not intended for habitation, detached or separated by a main wall with a minimum fire performance of REI 120 to BS EN 13501. If a battery energy storage system (BESS) is installed on the external wall of a building, it should not compromise the fire performance of the external wall.
