According to the national energy policy, policy guidelines such as the ’General Policy Guidelines on the Electricity Industry’ are expected to be prepared and issued for each sub sector as required under Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 20 of 2009.
Primarily, Sri Lanka has the required resource potential – particularly wind energy and solar energy resources. Even with the potential lands of solar power development alone, the electricity generation capacity for a foreseeable future period can be met.
This energy policy in Sri Lanka is expected to pave the way for the country to emerge as a stronger economy with lesser dependence on energy. The focus on a knowledge-fuelled economy will help maintain the energy intensity of the economy at current healthy levels, even in a world that faces frequent energy crises.
Sri Lanka has achieved 100% electrification, thereby fulfilling the goal of providing modern energy sources to all its citizens. This achievement is important for economic growth amidst universal access, which requires the energy supply capacity to be steadily increased. The growth in demand can also be managed by improving the efficiency of energy conversion.
3.10.3 Sri Lankan enterprises will be encouraged to engage in energy sector infrastructure development. 3.10.4 Research and development on introducing, adopting and implementing new and emerging renewable fuel sources, efficient energy conversion and end use technologies will be promoted.
