Mining lithium and then producing lithium-based technologies is a compelling way to provide economic diversification, job creation, and regional development. Mexico could move up the value chain into lithium refinement and, perhaps one day, lithium-ion battery production to complement its already-thriving automotive industry.
She said that the US currently offers subsidies to lithium battery manufacturers, while the Mexican government has said that there will not be direct subsidies to such companies, and that the finance ministry is working on a package of “interesting” incentives for Tesla to set up shop in Mexico.
In recent years, Mexico’s outgoing President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), has sought to develop lithium resources in the state of Sonora. AMLO and many Mexican policymakers hope to leverage lithium to profit from the rapidly growing value chain of clean energy minerals and technology.
What Is Happening With Mexico’s Lithium Industry? In April 2022, the Mexican government nationalized lithium exploration and exploitation, backed by the Sonora Plan, which aims to transform Sonora into a clean energy hub.
The factory will be managed by a Mexican company called Luna. It is also touted to bring dynamism to the state’s economy and boost the lithium battery value chain. Villa added that at its first stage, the factory will create over 250 direct jobs and another 500 additional jobs from its potential suppliers.
Since nationalizing lithium resources in 2022, Mexico has created a state lithium company: LitioMX. This, of course, follows the path of Mexico’s state-owned oil company Pemex. However, the recent performance of Pemex is not something policymakers should hope to emulate.
