DESNZ said that it considered it appropriate to exclude technologies that can already be funded under existing market arrangements, including lithium-ion which is the technology of choice for the vast majority of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects being deployed, with more than 3.5GW online already in the UK.
The available government subsidies for battery storage in the UK do not currently form a sufficiently significant and stable revenue stream to ensure battery storage project financings are fundable on the basis of capacity market or ancillary services alone.
These policies are mostly concentrated around battery storage system, which is considered to be the fastest growing energy storage technology due to its efficiency, flexibility and rapidly decreasing cost. ESS policies are primarily found in regions with highly developed economies, that have advanced knowledge and expertise in the sector.
In several countries, revised capacity markets now allow energy storage operators to compete for subsidy contracts on a more equal footing with power generators. Support from the European Battery Alliance and €1 billion in loans from the European Investment Bank in 2020 alone should help shore up investor confidence.
One of such projects is the Zhangbei 36 MWh lithium ion battery ESS which was installed to evaluate the value and kind of services it can add to the grid . Due to the rapid deployment of renewable energy power generating systems, the integration of ESS and renewable energy such as solar PV and wind was given priority.
