A capacitor is used to provide a dc offset (dc level) from the stored charge. A typical clamper is made up of a capacitor, diode, and resistor. Some clampers contain an extra element called DC battery. The resistors and capacitors are used in the clamper circuit to maintain an altered DC level at the clamper output.
The load resistor and the capacitor affect the waveform. So, the discharging time of the capacitor should be large enough. The DC component present in the input is rejected when a capacitor coupled network is used (as a capacitor blocks dc). Hence when dc needs to be restored, clamping circuit is used.
This DC component is introduced into the circuit by utilizing a capacitor (which is the main component of a clamper circuit apart from diode and resistor). The capacitor store the charge in one half-cycle and discharges in another half cycle where it adds to the input signal and shifts the DC level of the whole signal. Related Posts:
There are many applications for both Clippers and Clampers such as Electronic Circuits - Clamper Circuits - A Clamper Circuit is a circuit that adds a DC level to an AC signal. Actually, the positive and negative peaks of the signals can be placed at desired levels using the clamping circuits.
Negative clamping circuit clamps the input signal to the -ve Dc level i.e. below the zero level. A biased clamper allows a waveform to be shifted above (or below) a dc reference other than 0 V. By using a voltage source and resistor, the clamper can be biased to bind the output voltage to a different value.
Clamping can be used to adapt an input signal to a device that cannot make use of or may be damaged by the signal range of the original input. During the first negative phase of the AC input voltage, the capacitor in a positive clamper circuit charges rapidly.
