To analyze the capacity degradation process, batteries need to be cycled in various working conditions, in which a CC discharging process or a CC charging process is conducted to obtain battery discharging or charging capacity in each cycle. Fig. 2 (a) shows a typical cycling condition for battery cells tested in laboratory.
For example, Barré et al. establish an EV battery aging experiment, in which a check-up test is applied after a period of driving to calculate the capacity. This check-up test requires a full charging process with a low current, and the batteries are rested for an hour before and after the process.
With all these analyses above, it is clear that frequent and short charging rather than rare and prolonged charging, keeping the vehicle operating in a middle-low SOC, charging the battery when the SOC drops to less than 40 % but higher than 30 %, and avoiding the SOC dropping to less than 10 % can decrease the degradation.
The battery fading brings two distinct phenomena: the increase in internal resistance (Rint) and the decrease in capacity. For EVs, the capacity decline directly reduces the driving range; while the resistance increase can not only decrease the system efficiency but also reduce the system power capability.
Moreover, correlations between capacity degradation and user behaviors are analyzed, and the results indicate that charging the battery with the start point at a SOC between 30 % and 40 % can effectively relieve the degradation. 1. Introduction
