In the case, the auxiliary service of energy storage to the power grid is mainly realized through the peak regulation of the power grid. The peak-valley price difference between various regions is about 0.36–1.06 ¥/kW·h, while the unit capacity price of sensible heat energy storage is generally 170–260 ¥/kW·h [ 36 ].
Auxiliary service stage: the excess power of the power grid is stored in the form of heat to the heat accumulator when the power consumption is low, and the cogeneration of heat and power is carried out to provide auxiliary services for the power grid when the power grid needs power for auxiliary services.
These two energy storage methods represent promising technologies for retrofitting HWPS. Typical example of HWPBS project include the hydro-wind-photovoltaic system located along the lower Jinsha River in China. A representative example of a pumping station retrofit project is the hybrid power plant on the Greek island of Ikaria.
Analysis of other electrochemical energy storage technologies There are several alternative technologies in electrochemical energy storage, such as all-solid-state batteries, vanadium redox flow batteries, sodium-ion batteries, sodium-sulfur batteries, and lead-acid batteries. Table 8 details their parameters.
Two hydropower storage retrofit modes are assessed technically and economically. The optimal energy storage enhancement in Chinese hydropower is identified. Pumping station retrofit is superior in storage duration and power absorption. Initial cost and channel capacity are critical for battery retrofit.
According to the calculation, the IRR for 20 years operation in cogeneration mode is determined as 10.2 %, with a payback period of 8.4 years. It can be seen that CSESS owns better economic performance than electrochemical energy storage, which is due to its lower unit energy storage cost and higher comprehensive energy utilization efficiency.
