Despite all the promising characteristics of perovskite solar cells, several challenges have been overcome to achieve large-scale commercialization. Toxicity, manufacturing consistency, and encapsulation are some of these challenges (Meng et al., 2018).
Impressively, the PCE for perovskite-Si tandem solar cells have been improved to 33.9% by LONGi company, which further increase the potential of perovskite solar cells towards commercialization . However, towards commercialization, perovkire-Si tandem solar cells are faced with harsher requirements for the stability, scale-up and cost control.
Silicon is still the most popular technology, whereas thin-film technologies seek application perspectives and cost-effectiveness. Clearly, perovskite solar cells are disruptive in the sense of high efficiency, low cost, and continuous enhancement in stability in the solar industry.
Here, we examine the difficulties encountered in the commercialization of perovskite devices, such as material and structural stability, device stability under high temperature and humidity conditions, lifetime, and manufacturing cost.
Consequently, p - i - n perovskite cells are currently the preferred platform for high-efficiency single-junction and tandem cells with perovskite. On the other hand, n - i - p perovskite solar cells face significant challenges, primarily in terms of stability.
Recently, highly stabilized solar cells with negligible voltage loss have been explored [ 89 ]. A perovskite device with long-term stability has displayed a PCE of approximately 25.2%.
