Safety capacitors are also called EMI / RFI suppression capacitors, AC line filter safety capacitors, or X- and Y-rated capacitors. X and Y capacitors not only keep radio frequency noise generated by the device local to that device, but also protect the device from mains noise and high voltage surges.
Safety capacitors are manufactured from plastic film or ceramic dielectric, with the plastic film dielectric manufactured from polypropylene and the ceramic manufactured from barium titanate.
All safety capacitors are approved according to IEC 60384-14.4, UL, and CQC, while all series are compliant with RoHS and the REACH regulations. Vishay’s line of X1 / Y2 and X2 surface-mount safety capacitors offers devices for operating voltages up to 250 VAC. As surface-mount devices, the capacitors simplify circuit board assembly.
These safety capacitors are also known by other names, including EMI/RFI suppression capacitors and AC line filter safety capacitors. For example, KEMET’s CAS series surface mount ceramic safety capacitors are rated X1/Y2 250 VAC commercial grade, and X2 250 VAC industrial grade. In other words, customers can use commercial grade CAS capacitors in 250 VAC applications and safely withstand more than 2.5 kV impulse voltages, up to 4.0 kV, if installed line-to-line (class X1).
The general rules of application for safety capacitors are a count of three safety capacitors (one X and two Y) consumed in power supplies, and two Y-type capacitors consumed in lighting ballasts. These applications support a multi-billion piece global market for safety capacitors each year.
